  • Co-I leading UoR contribution to NERC highlight topic grant EMERGENCE, 2019-2022, led by Mat Collins at University of Exeter. Other Co-Investigators at UoR are Ed Hawkins and Pier-Luigi Vidale
  • PI leading the DFID/Met Office WCSSP-India IMPROVE project (Indian Monsoon PRecipitation over Orography: Verification and Enhancement of understanding), and its follow-on IMPROVE_FO, 2019-2022.   • PI leading the DFID/Met Office WCSSP-India STIMULATE project (Seasonal Teleconnections to the Indian Monsoon: Understanding the Large-scale Atmospheric Tropical Environment), 2019-2021.   • PI leading the Belmont Forum/JPI-Climate Collaborative Research Action on Climate Predictability and Interregional linkages: BITMAP project (Better understanding of Interregional Teleconnections for prediction in the Monsoon and Poles), 2016-2020. International consortium with University of Hamburg and National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts, India. Co-Investigators are Valerio Lucarini (Hamburg), Ashis Mitra and EN Rajagopal (NCMRWF, India).
  • PI leading the major NERC/MoES project INCOMPASS (Interaction of Convective Organisation and Monsoon Precipitation, Atmosphere, Surface and Sea). This project involves a ground and airborne field campaign in 2016, using the FAAM aircraft. Supervision of Dr Arathy Menon.
  • Co-I leading monsoon research in NERC large consortium grant REAL Projections (Robust Spatial Projections of Real-World Climate Change), 2016-2020, led by Mat Collins at University of Exeter. Supervision of Dr Jon Shonk. Other Co-Investigators at UoR are Ed Hawkins as lead and Rowan Sutton

  • Co-I on Met Office CSSP-China projects 2015-2018:
    • MESETA (CSSP-Tibetan Plateau). Co-supervision of Dr Mike Wong, investigating the relative role of dynamic and thermodynamic forcing on the Asian monsoon and participating in the Global Monsoon MIP, and Dr Julia Curio, investigating Tibetan Plateau Vortices (TPVs) and their downstream impacts on East Asia. Project PI is Dr Reinhard Schiemann.

  • PI on Indian Monsoon Mission project funded by the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES). Supervision of PDRA Dr Stephanie Bush to examine the causes of biases in forecasts of the South Asian monsoon in the MetUM system on time scales of days to the season
  • NERC Changing Water Cycle (South Asia) projects: Both of the CWC projects involve significant partnerships with Indian institutions as funded by the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MOES).
  • PI and Co-I on Met Office CSSP short projects October 2014 - March 2015:
    • PI on WP2.3 - Predictability of regional climate and modes of variability. Working with Ed Hawkins and Emma Suckling on interannual-to-decadal variability for East Asia; and Nick Klingaman and Linda Hirons on subseasonal variability
    • Co-I on WP3.3 - High resolution modelling of the East Asian monsoon; working with Liang Guo on this project led by Pier-Luigi Vidale
  • PI on the NERC/Met Office Joint Weather and Climate Research Programme (JWCRP) project Modelling Monsoon Systems together with Gill Martin at the UK Met Office. Supervision of PDRA Dr Stephanie Bush (2010-2014) to explore the sensitivity of monsoon biases in the Met Office Unified model to convective parametrization and model resolution
