Development of Deep from Shallow Convection

This is a Marie-Curie funded project to begin in August 2025. The overarching aim is to develop a prototype parameterization approach that explicitly considers both cloud-cloud interactions and environmental heterogeneity. Many current models treat shallow convection (associated with fair-weather cumulus clouds) and deep convection (associated with storm clouds) as two distinct phenomena, based on two distinct theoretical foundations, which inevitably then requires the use of additional ad-hoc assumptions for their interplay, including the initiation of deep convection. The new approach envisages a unified treatment with the distinction between them arising naturally from the number of overlapping elements developing within a given cloud.
