Chemistry at lower resolution

  • Jung et al (2012), Tao and Chern (2017) have shown that greater resolution benefits both dynamics and convection, such as
    • storm tracks, and
    • mesoscale convective systems
  • Till also found that the N48 model was poor for mid-latitude storm tracks dynamics.
  • However, there's less evidence that other science benefits so strongly from greater resolution.
  • Can other science which is prohibitively expensive be run at a lower resolution?
  • In UKESM1, the chemistry slows the model by a factor of about 3 (200% slower)
  • In UKESM1-hybrid, we run the chemistry at a lower resolution
