Chemistry at lower resolution
- Jung et al (2012), Tao and Chern (2017) have shown that
greater resolution benefits both dynamics and convection, such as
- storm tracks, and
- mesoscale convective systems
- Till also found that the N48 model was poor
for mid-latitude storm tracks dynamics.
- However, there's less evidence that other science benefits so
strongly from greater resolution.
- Can other science which is prohibitively expensive be run at a
lower resolution?
- In UKESM1, the chemistry slows the model by a factor of about 3
(200% slower)
- In UKESM1-hybrid, we run the chemistry at a lower resolution
