Supervision of PhD Projects

I supervised the following PhD students:

Maria Vittoria Guarino (2014-2017) (co-supervised with Maarten Ambaum), who worked on a project about:

  • Mountain wave breaking in atmospheric flows with directional wind shear,

whose main aim is to understand mountain wave breaking in flows with directional wind shear, and improve forecast methods for CAT produced by mountain waves.

Annelize van Niekirk (2013-2017) (co-supervised with Theodore Shepherd), who worked on a project about:

  • The role of orographic drag in modelled atmospheric circulation.

Holly Turner (2015-2019) (co-supervised with John Methven and Simon Vosper), who is working in collaboration with the UK Met Office on a project about:

  • Wind profile and boundary layer effects on gravity wave drag,

whose main aim is to improve the orographic drag parametrization of the Unified model, incorporating effects of vertical wind shear.

Jasmine George (2019-present) (co-supervised with Alan Grant, Valerio Lucarini and Jean Bidlot), working in collaboration with the ECMWF on a project entitled

  • Towards a theory for the surface layer of the ocean,

whose main aim is to improve the turbulence parametrization for the ocean surface layer taking into account the effect of surface waves.
