ICE-D, AER-D and SAVEX-D

The ICE-D (Ice in Clouds - Dust) aircraft campaign took place based at Praia, Cape Verde, during August 2015, led by the UK Met Office, with ground-based radar and aerosol observations from the Universities of Manchester and Leeds funded by NERC. The main component of the campaign was to investigate the influence of dust particles on ice cloud development. See a short description of the project that made it onto a clip for Anglia ITV News. See also ICE-D at FAAM, ICE-D at NCAS, ICE-D at the Met Office.

AER-D concerns the dust components of the ICE-D flying. These flights involved in-situ and remote sensing measurements of dust plumes transported over the Atlantic from the Sahara, for purposes of satellite and model validation. Additionally, two EUFAR-funded flights were carried out as part of the SAVEX project (Sunphotometer Airborne Validation Experiment). These flights involved measurements under dusty conditions close to our ground-based observations at Praia where two different sunphotometers were being operated. See a description of SAVEX in the EUFAR September 2015 Newsletter.
