Installing SuSE using PXE boot
The steps required are
- Edit the /etc/dhcpd.conf file, see
DHCP page, on the TFTP server (currently ellesmere) and add something
like
host lapse {
option host-name "lapse";
hardware ethernet 00:30:48:21:b8:b3;
fixed-address 134.225.100.13;
}
so you'll need the MAC and IP address of client
- Access the BIOS on client (probably have to type `F1' or `Delete'
key), and select PXE boot as the only boot device (it'll be under ->
Boot and something like -> Boot device, but they vary). Save changes
and exit.
- It should install itself now for about 20 minutes. Potential problems:
- Can't find the IP address: perhaps the DHCP server isn't
running on TFTP server.
- `Could not find the SUSE Linux Installation Source. Activating
manual setup program.' It probably can't find the SuSe
installation, i.e. copy of DVD or CDs, so check that the directory,
e.g. /export/ellesmere/suse/SU930_001,
containing this stuff is shared through NFS server on the TFTP
server.
- YaST says it can't find the remote control fine, so
check that the directory, e.g. /var/lib/autoinstall/repository,
containing remote control file is shared through NFS server on the TFTP
server.
- Other problems encountered in YaST are likely to be the remote
control file not being set up properly.
- You'll be presented with a login screen when it's finished. Login
in as root and the password is likely to have been set to PXEboot
(you'll be changing it shortly). Log in.
- -> Desktop -> YaST
- -> Security and Users -> Edit and Create Users -> Configure ->
Set Filter: System Users, -> root -> Edit, Set password,
-> Accept, -> Finish
