Global Data Evaluation and Visualisation Laboratory

Welcome to GDEVL

Welcome to GDEVL, a website designed to describe the facilities of the Global Data Evaluation and Visualisation Laboratory. This facility has been installed in the Department of Meteorology at the University of Reading by scientists in DARC and ITT Visual Information Solutions.

DARC is a NERC-funded United Kingdom centre of excellence in data assimilation, while ITT Visual Information Solutions (now known as Exelis) are world-reknowned for providing solutions for data visualization and image analysis, including the IDL software.

GDEVL is a hardware/software solution to the problem of analysing and visualising vast amounts of four-dimensional geophysical data, for example that which may be generated by high-resolution weather forecast models.

The development work, carried out in 2004-7, was funded by NERC as part of a strategic funding investment in capital equipment.
