Data Assimilation for Numerical Weather Prediction - Between Research and Operational Needs
We provide a survey about data assimilation activities at the German Met Service. With a model hierarchy which consists of a new global model ICON with a higher-resolved European nest and a high-resolution convection resolving model COSMO-DE the challenge consists of developing a state-of-the-art data assimilation methods for research and operational use which include conventional measurements, satellite data and new remote sensing technologies. We are developing an integrated data assimilation system, which consists of a hybrid VarEnKF on the global and an EnKF on the regional scale.
Within an intense network of academic links the German Met Service works on developing joint projects with the academic community, which serve both the further scientific development as well as our public responsibility as a national institution in a rapidly evolving European and global framework.
