Convective scale background error covariance modelling using normal modes
The control variable transform (CVT) is a common method of modelling background error statistics. This approach relies on various assumptions e.g. hydrostatic and geostrophic balance to remove multivariate correlations. These assumptions may not be appropriate approximations at the convective scale. In this presentation the use of linear normal modes as the uncorrelated control variables will be discussed.
