Real-time applications of particle filters in engineering field (pdf)
State estimation in real-time by particle filter for engineering applications have been introduced. The applications include basic visual tracking based on pixel ratio likelihood, car driver's motion tracking with respect to face posture by camera, hands motion by camera and depth image sensor, and foot motion by microwave Doppler sensor, multiple pedestrian tracking by sensor fusion of laser range signal and omni-vision as well as on-board camera in a car cabin, face decoration for amusement purpose. Parallel implementation of real-time particle filter in multiple core processor and GPGPU (General Purpose Graphic Processing Unit) framework have been proposed and applied to some applications above. Real-time demonstrations for several open events for high school students, automotive industries, and industry and academia have been introduced. In addition, an extensive research group in Japan on particle filter has been introduced.
