Influence of assimilating supplemental observations on tropical cyclone analyses and predictions

Abstract:

A series of recent papers has focused on the influence of assimilating supplementary aircraft-based observations on analyses and predictions of tropical cyclone track and structure. These observations include additional rawinsondes and dropwindsondes deployed by NOAA prior to a tropical cyclone making landfall in the United States. The impacts of assimilating the supplementary observations in NOAA's Global Forecast System have generally been positive, though often small. In addition to a summary of recent results, new diagnostic tools to investigate the role of the Hybrid Variational-Ensemble data assimilation scheme in treating the observations and carrying their impact forward will be presented.
