See Wikipedia page for details. Varying ρ (the Rayleigh number) gives the most joy. This defines the relative conductive or convective dominance i.e., a low value of ρ indicates heat transfer is primarily in the form of conduction.

In the present context, a low value of ρ defines a stable system (that is caught by one of the two attractors).
