Probability in Variational Data Assimilation (pdf)
Recently I have made the transition from working in ensemble-based data assimilation to working in variational data assimilation. I have always taken a Bayesian approach to DA, in which the truth is a random variable and the background is a parameter of its distribution. However, it has become clear to me, on reading the literature and talking to practitioners, that some people have a different view. To them, the background is the random variable and the truth is an unknown constant. Are such people misguided? Or can perfect sense be made of it all? Come along to find out.
