Developing coupled data assimilation methods in the presence of model error. (pdf)
Coupled atmospheric and oceanic models are currently used by operational centres to produce seasonal-decadal forecasts. Operational centres are moving towards coupled estimation of the initial conditions for both the atmospheric and oceanic variables. The aim of my PhD is to investigate the improvements this coupled estimation can make to forecasts when using a simple model and then further to this develop estimation methods to account for the fact that models contain error.
