Highlights 
 
January was a mild month with no days when the temperature stayed 
below 0degC, and was the warmest since 1993. There were few air frosts 
and just 2 days with snow, but rainfall was well above average. 
 
February was a mild, dry and sunny month, with slightly less than 
normal amounts of frost. There were, however some sharp ground frosts 
between the 8th and 14th. After snowfall on the 8th, there was over 50 
per cent ground snow cover on the 9th at 0900GMT (albeit only half a 
centimetre deep). mean air pressure was substantially above average. 
The month's minimum temperature of -4.8egC was the lowest in February 
for 8 years. 
 
March was another mild month, and quite dry too. After a cool spell 
during the first week and a half, the temperature rose to 20.3degC 
mid-month under anticyclonic conditions (the warmest March day for 9 
years). The wettest day was the 2nd, but only 4.5mm fell. 
 
April was another warmer than average month, but both rainfall and 
sunshine totals were close to average. There was a cool spell around 
mid-month, which as reflected in a steady decline in the soil 
temperatures at all levels. Sleet fell briefly on the 13th, and about 
two-thirds of the month's rainfall fell from the 19th to 25th. 
 
May was mild, but duller than normal. While the rainfall total for the 
month was slightly above average, this was largely due to a fall of 
20.6mm (accompanied by 1cm diameter hail) during the evening of the 
19th - a fall that lasted barely 50 minutes. The total duration of 
rainfall during the month was well below normal. 
 
June was wetter than normal while the average temperature was normal 
for the first time this year. Almost all the month's rainfall fell in 
two wet spells from the 1st-6th and 28th-30th, with 30.5mm falling 
during a thunderstorm on the 2nd. 
 
July was the warmest and driest since 1995 and the sunniest since 
1990. Almost all the rain fell during the first 5 days of the month, 
with a heavy thunderstorm during the night of the 2nd/3rd accounting 
for two-thirds of the month's total in 90 minutes. The ground dried 
out rapidly during the second half of the month, and it turned very 
hot at times during the last week with 30.9degC on the 31st. 
 
August was warm and wet. After a hot start (31.2degC on the 1st was 
the hottest day of the year), there followed an unsettled and thundery 
spell. 62mm of precipitation fell on the 8th and 9th, with the fall of 
48.8mm on the 9th being the wettest day since September 1992. There 
weere 5 days with thunder during August, which was generally dull 
until the 19th - after when it turned drier and sunnier. 
 
September was the warmest for 50 years, and the maximum temperature of 
27.8C on the 11th was very high for so late in the year. It was also a 
wet and sunny month, with the best of the sunshine during the first 10 
days, and most of the rainfall coming in the second half of the month. 
 
October was sunnier than September but, despite a lack of frost, was 
cooler than average. There was remarkably little variation in the 
daytime maximum temperatures throughout the month, and fog was less 
frequent than normal. 
 
November was a mild month, mainly due to a high average minimum 
temperature that resulted from a low incidence of frost. In fact, air 
frost occurred only on the 30th, lasting for about 10 minutes. It was 
a dry and sunny month, due to persistent anticyclonic conditions - 
mean air pressure was 8.8mb above normal. 
 
December was a mild month overall, and both much wetter and sunnier 
than normal. Although amounts snowfall amounts were small, the number 
of days with snow falling (5) was much higher than in recent years, 
and sleet on the 25th made it a white Christmas in Maidenhead. The 
incidence of rainfall was high, as denoted by the fact that 0.2mm or 
more fell on 25 days. A reading of -6.3degC on the 20th was the lowest 
in any month since December 1991. 
 
Overall, 1999 was a warm, wet and sunny year, with frequent 
thunderstorms during the late spring and summer in Maidenhead. The 
mean temperature was 0.2degC cooler than the warmest year on record in 
the town, although only October was cooler than the long-term average. 
There were 31 days during the year with afternoon temperatures 
reaching 25degC or higher, but no days when it remained below freezing 
all day. 
 
While not as wet as 1998, the year was much wetter than normal with 
wet months being interspersed throughout the year, and with some heavy 
falls in thunderstorms. In fact 1999 was the wettest year (apart from 
1998) since 1981. 
 
The frequency of thunder was much higher in 1999 than normal, and the 
year recorded the most thunderstorms in the town since 1982 (although 
the same number of thundery days occurred in 1983 and 1984). Sunshine 
was well-above average and, while the total for the year was not as 
high as in 1995 and 1997, the number of sunless days was the lowest 
since 1990. None of the months was outstandingly sunny in terms of 
breaking any recent records (with the exception of October which was 
the second sunniest in the last 40 years) although there were not 
really any dull ones apart from May. 
 
Frost, snow and fog all occurred less frequently that average, 
although the number of days with snow was the greatest since 1996. The 
number of days with fog (visibility below 1000 metres) at 0900GMT was 
the lowest since 1967.
