Highlights

January was a mild month; the first 7 days were quite wet, but the
last 13 were mainly dry with sharp ground frosts. On the 9th the air
temperature rose to 14.4degC, the highest January temperature since
1975.

February was a mild, dry and sunny month, but with suprisingly little
air frost. In fact, it was the second mildest February since 1863 and
the sunniest for 10 years. Only 3 days received over 1 millimetre of
precipitation, and the anticyclonic nature of the month was shown by
the mean air pressure which was 10.5 mb above normal. There were some
sharp ground frosts during the first 8 days.

March was mild, albeit cooler than in 1997, and on the night of the
29th/30th the temperature stayed above 12.9degC - the warmest March
night for over 45 years. It was dry from the 13th to 23rd due to a
prevailing area of high pressure and on the 19th the air pressure rose
to 1043 mb.

April was the wettest in Maidenhead since at least 1859, with the
first 19 days being particularly wet. Not suprisingly, sunshine
amounts were significantly below average, and air pressure was 11.3 mb
below normal indicating the cyclonic nature of the month. Thunder
occurred on 7 days, a very high incidence for April.

May was mild and sunny with less rainfall than normal. There was a
warm spell from the 8th to the 20th when the ground dried out
considerably; the sunniest day of the year occurred on the 17th.

June was wet, the total rainfall ranking as about a 1 in 10 year event
for Maidenhead. The number of days with 1.0mm or more was the highest
in June for over 45 years. The cloud associated with the rain kept the
nights much warmer than normal, and sunshine totals were well below
average. Only two days received more than 10 hous of sunshine.

July was dry and dull, with daytime temperatures a little below
normal. On only one day did the temperature exceed 25degC.

August was the most summery month of the year, being warm, dry and
sunny. The perid of the 4th to the 12th ws the sunniest spell of the
month, and daytime temperatures rose to 28degC on 4 days during this
period.

September was mild and wet, being the second wettest September since
1982 and the mildest September since 1989 due to some warm nights at
the start and end of the month.

October was also wet, being the fourth wettest since 1924. Over 29mm
of rain fell on the 31st, and there were 14 days with over 1.0mm of
rain falling.

November was colder than normal, with a large number of ground frosts
and many days with airflow from an easterly direction during the
second half of the month. Anticyclone conditions prevailed for much of
the last fortnight, but skies were mainly cloudy then. A
close-to-average sunshine total for the month resulted from bright
spells, between periods of rain, during the first half of the month.

December was a mild month with winds predominantly from westerly and
southwesterly directions. Maidenhead did, however, escape much of the
very wet weather that affected some other parts of the the south and
west of Britain.

Overall, 1998 will be remembered for its rainfall. The total fall of
precipitation (798.9mm) was the greatest since 1974, and both the
number of raindays (days with 0.2mm or more) and the number of wetdays
(days with 1.0mm or more) were the greatest for at least 18 years.
June was wet, but otherwise the summer was quite dry; the spring and
autumn were wet.

The mean minimum temperature of 7.5degC was the equal highest on
record (with 1994), while the minimum temperature of -4.0degC was the
highest annual value since before 1953. The average temperature of
11.4degC for the year meant that 1998 was the fifth equal warmest year
in Maidenhead since thermometers were invented. The highest
temperature of the year was below 30degC for the first time in 5
years, while the lowest daytime maximum of 3.5degC recorded during the
year was the highest such value for over 45 years.

There was a marked lack of fog in 1998, with the number of days with
visibility below 1000m at 0900 GMT being the lowest since 1967.
Snowfall occurrence was below normal, while the incidence of thunder
was above normal due to a thundery April.

The sunshine total for the year was slightly below average, due to
dull spells from April to September; only August was much sunnier than
normal during this period, one reason (prehaps) why the summer will
not be remembered as `a good one' despite the positive temperature
anomalies and reduced rainfall during this period. It is worth noting
that the number of sunless days was lower than normal due to the very
sunny January and February.
