SIR - Dr Paul Williams (Letters, December 27) is incorrect in stating that peer review "prevents the publication of research containing errors or lacking evidence". Peer review can minimise the likelihood of publication of junk science, but it can never prevent it.

Just look at the number of retractions each year, and even the most prestigious journals are not immune.
