Research Interests:
- Dynamics of weather systems with emphasis on the evolution of extratropical and tropical cyclones, jet streams, Rossby waves and equatorial waves

- Predictability of the atmosphere including the dependence of high impact weather prediction on larger scale phenomena and the use of ensemble forecasting
- Airborne transport of atmospheric constituents, such as water vapour and pollution
- Designing field experiments to test theories and evaluate physically-based numerical models
- Theory for slowly varying components of the atmosphere and propagation of wave activity

- Huracan project investigating the risk of tropical cyclones to western Europe and NE America in a changing climate
- Forecasting for Southeast Asia (FORSEA) - a Newton Fund project focussing on increasing predictive skill across Southeat Asia using the links between equatorial waves and extreme rainfall. Working with met agencies in Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam and Malaysia.

- Dominic Jones recently finished his PhD working with the ECMWF on explaining timescales associated with jet stream variability. His co-supervisors were Tom Frame and Paul Berrisford (ECMWF).
- Kristine Boykin recently finished her PhD working with the Met Office on extracting likely scenarios from high resolution ensemble forecasts in real-time. Her co-supervisors were Tom Frame, Nigel Roberts and Stephen Moseley (Met Office).
- Jake Bland recently finished his PhD working on a project with the ECMWF on the control of cloud and moisture on extratropical cyclone evolution. His lead supervisor is Sue Gray with co-I Richard Forbes (ECMWF).
- James Fallon is a 4th year PhD student working on a project with BT on Understanding forecast value in complex decision-making systems. His lead supervisor is David Brayshaw with co-I Kjeld Jensen (BT).
- David Richardson works at ECMWF and is a PhD student (part-time) working on the behaviour of ensemble forecasts. His lead supervisor is Hannah Cloke.
- Hannah Croad is a 4th year PhD student working with the ECMWF and University of Oklahoma on Arctic summer-time cyclone growth and sea-ice interaction. Her co-supervisors are Ben Harvey, Sarah Keeley (ECMWF) and David Parsons (University of Oklahoma).
- Doug Wood is a 2nd year PhD student working on a project
with the ECMWF on the links between Arctic weather systems and
predictability in the mid-latitudes. His lead supervisor
is Sue Gray with co-I Mark Rodwell (ECMWF).
- Elliot McKinnon-Gray is a 1st year PhD student working on a project
with the Met Office on convectively coupled equatorial waves and their role in the predictive skill of forecasts. His co-supervisors are Tom Frame, Anne McCabe and Nigel Roberts (Met Office).
- Xueqing Ling is a 1st year PhD student working on the coupling between Arctic cyclones and the surface. Her lead supervisor
is Sue Gray .
