Dear All

I’m afraid that I have to start my e-mail this morning with a complaint. Had members of faculty known what excellent video editing skills there were among our PhD student body, a number of online lectures this term would have been a great deal more entertaining! Unfortunately, as I’ve misplaced my rappelling equipment, I’ve not been able to come into the department and check that the coffee room has been returned to a normal state following DJ Shonk last night. I assume though that Tom Frame was on hand with a mug full of Corona to ensure that the party went well.

I’m sure I’m not the only member of the department to have hugely appreciated the effort and fun that went into producing our first (and hopefully only) online panto, “The Greatest Storm” last night. Among a large number of excellent performances, it seems that we continue to deprive a regional theatre somewhere of a highly professional lead in PG Barnum. As usual, the songs were a mixture of creative, educational and imaginatively performed. Likewise, the coronavirus costumes did not disappoint. It was also very nice to see our Prime Minister not taking his eye off the ball when it comes to giving clear and concise guidance about the pandemic despite ongoing negotiations in Brussels.

Thank you to all those who were involved in putting on the show, not least to Devon and Max who directed proceedings and Jon, Hannah, Helen and others who put together the interval acts. As I (predictably) said on Twitter last night, the utter life affirming joy of seeing our traditions continue despite everything that has happened this year brings home what a brilliant place this is to work.

Please join us for carols after WCD today, and have a well-deserved rest over the Christmas break.

Andrew and Bob
