Responsibilities:

Academic lead on HEFCE Catalyst bid to establish Environmental Technology Innovation Centre at Reading.

Research Interests:

  • Large-scale stratospheric dynamics and tracer transport
  • Data assimilation

Research Projects:

  • Sensitivity of vortex splitting in the stratosphere to localized cyclogenesis in the troposphere.
  • Impact of representation of the stratosphere in models on weather, climate and predictability in the troposphere
  • Advanced data assimilation methods to exploit Earth Observation data from space (three linked projects funded by the European Space Agency)
  • CHARMe FP7-funded project with meteorological agencies and industry to develop an international standard for commentary metadata to help users decide if a climate data set is fit for their purpose.

Postdoctoral & graduate student supervision

  • Alex Lawes is working towards an M.Phil on the role of the stratosphere on surface weather and climate, particularly in the Atlantic sector.
