Research Projects:

  • Study of shortwave spectra in fully 3D environment: Synergy between scanning radars and spectral radiation measurements: The Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) program set out 20 years ago to "close" the radiation problem, that is, to improve radiation models to the point where they could routinely predict the observed spectral radiation fluxes knowing the optical properties of the surface and of gases, clouds and aerosols in the atmosphere. This project aims to advance the understanding and closure of the surface spectral shortwave radiation problem in fully 3D cloud situations by combining the new ARM scanning radars, shortwave spectrometers, and microwave radiometers with radiative transfer tools.
  • MAGIC Cloud Properties from zenith radiance data: To understand the feedback processes of marine boundary layer clouds, the AMF2 MAGIC field campaign, sponsored by the US Department of Energy, aims to observe the transition from the stratocumulus to shallow trade-wind cumulus. These clouds pose great challenges for remote sensing techniques because of their highly inhomogeneous and fast evolving nature. We aim to provide observations of cloud optical depth and effective droplet size at high temporal resolution using the ARM sunphotometer. The proposed sunphotometer deployment will be a pathfinder not just for seagoing deployments, but also for many future deployments.
  • Dynamics-aerosol-chemistry-cloud interactions in West Africa (DACCIWA): The DACCIWA project will conduct extensive fieldwork in southern West Africa to collect high-quality observations, spanning the entire process chain from surface-based natural and anthropogenic emissions to impacts on health, ecosystems and climate. Combining the resulting benchmark dataset with a wide range of modelling activities will allow (a) to assess all relevant physical and chemical processes, (b) to improve the monitoring of climate and compositional parameters from space and (c) to develop the next generation of weather and climate models capable of representing coupled cloud-aerosol interactions, which will ultimately lead to reduced uncertainties in climate predictions.

Postdoctoral & graduate student supervision

  • Dr Peter Hill works on cloud-radiation interactions over west Africa, funded by the EU FP7 DACCIWA project.

  • Dr Shannon Mason works on the development of cloud and precipitation retrievals for the forthcoming EarthCARE satellite, and their exploitation for understanding atmospheric processes and evaluating models, funded by the UK National Centre for Earth Observation (NCEO).

  • Dr Yann Blanchard works on improving understanding and representations of cloud, aerosol, precipitation and radiation in climate models using novel, synergistic ground-based measurements, funded by the US Atmospheric System Research program.

  • Jake Gristey is a 3rd year PhD student working on understanding the Earth's energy flows at high temporal resolution using new, viable, and sustainable observation strategies from a constellation of satellites, co-supervised by Prof. Robert Gurney; the project is CASE-supported by the Met Office and the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

  • Rachael Byrom is a first-year PhD student working on methane radiative forcing, focusing on the solar near-IR, co-supervised by Prof. Keith Shine.
