Stratosphere and Climate Group

Our work

Our prime interest lies in understanding dynamical and radiative influences, with particular emphasis on the natural variability of the atmosphere in the context of climate change. Current topics of research include stratospheric warmings, solar influence on climate, the quasi-biennial and semi-annual oscillations and simulations of the climate of the past 25 years. We use a number of different tools and techniques. The main modelling tools are the middle atmosphere extension of the Met Office's Unified Model (UM), the Reading Intermediate Global circulation model (IGCM) and the Stratosphere Mesosphere Model (SMM). Analysis techniques include regression analysis, empirical mode decomposition (EMD), empirical mode decomposition (EOF), cluster analysis and other standard analysis methods.

The group is involved with a number of research projects:

  • Middle Atmosphere GCM Modelling
  • Natural Variability of the Stratosphere
  • Sudden Stratospheric Warmings
  • Stratospheric Temperature Trends
  • The Role of the Stratosphere in Climate Change
  • Atmospheric Teleconnections with the Tropical Stratosphere
  • The QBO
  • Solar Influence on Climate
