Research Division - Earth Observation and Space

Research Division leader: Professor Chris Merchant

We make extensive use of satellite and ground-based remote sensing to understand weather and climate processes and how electrically charged particles affect the solar and terrestrial atmospheric environments. This understanding is used to verify and develop models and forecasting techniques. The Earth Observation expertise within the Department includes many scientists affiliated to NERC's National Centre for Earth Observation, the Data-Assimilation Directorate of which resides in Reading. We make use of advanced data assimilation techniques and have a number of staff jointly affiliated to Meteorology and the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.
