MSc Applied Meteorology and Climate with Management

Accreditation
This programme is being considered by the Royal Meteorological Society as appropriate training for meteorologists seeking the Chartered Meteorologist qualification.

Programme Aims

The aim of this MSc is to provide practising meteorologists with updated scientific knowledge and understanding combined with expert training in modern management skills, the latter provided by Henley Business School on the campus. The meteorological content is biased towards the applied side of the discipline.

You will acquire the technical and computing skills to equip you to carry out quantitative scientific research and technical projects not only within meteorology but within related areas of environmental science.

Additionally, students will be trained in the use of the UK Met Office’s ‘PRECIS’ software for climate prediction and its interpretation. This will provide the basis for graduates to develop such expertise in their home weather services.

Programme content

The programme consists of a taught element and a dissertation. Within the former there are a number of compulsory (C) and optional (O) modules. Many of these are partly or completely assessed by coursework while some involve 100% formal examinations.

Full details are available in the course module table.

Transferable skills

You will gain useful, transferable skills and experience while taking this programme including:

  • Presentation skills (written and verbal)
  • Team-working
  • Management skills related to individuals & organisations
  • Interpreting and conveying climate prediction output on a regional/national scale
  • Solving numerical problems related to environmental science
  • Reviewing and synthesising information in a specific field of interest
  • Practical measurement skills

Entry requirements

Candidates must be employed by a less developed nation’s meteorological service and offer a degree (Lower Second Class Honours or above – or equivalent) normally in mathematics, physics or a related subject that contains a satisfactory proportion of mathematics and/or physics. All candidates enter after winning support from the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) in the form of a Fellowship.

This means that entry is a two stage process. The first step is for the University’s Faculty of Science Office to make you a formal offer. This is followed by you applying to WMO for a Fellowship – including the University’s offer letter – at which point you will be assessed by WMO and the International Branch of the UK Met Office who are also involved.

Registration

All students are initially registered for MSc/Diploma. Final allocation to either will be on the basis of performance in examinations and coursework prior to the Summer Term.
