Life at Meteorology
As a full or part-time postgraduate student in Meteorology at Reading, we will help you settle in with a 'welcome' meeting in Freshers' week and an ice-breaker reception in the first week of term.
The range of Meteorology MSc programmes usually attract between 30 and 40 students each year, from a wide range of backgrounds. The classes normally consist of recent graduates, those attempting to change career, professionals from overseas normally working as forecasters at home and occasionally non-employed older graduates that are simply interested in pursuing a higher degree out of personal interest. p>
The Department is one of the best such in the world. It has a genuinely open, friendly atmosphere that students appreciate. All staff are approachable and you will be in a tutor group for the first term. There is a good measure of group work including in general working with your peers in labs and problem classes. Group working is developed too during the residential Dorset Weather Weekend module and during the Spring Term ‘Team Project’ week.
Students are encouraged to attend meetings of the Royal Meteorological Society that occur monthly during term time normally in London and occasionally in Reading. Many students join as members of our professional body. The Spring Term involves a few visits, including one to the UK Met Office HQ in Exeter and presentations by recent, employed MSc graduates.
In general, there are many social events organised within the Department including a Christmas pantomime, a Summer Barbeque, a ‘Mets got talent’ show as well as numerous sporting events such as a staff-student cricket team, a squash ladder and the ‘Golden Mallet’ croquet competition.
