Thoughts on multi-scale data assimilation

Abstract:

Almost all geophysical systems of interest possess a range of space and time scales. In addition, "multi-scale" is an increasingly frequent term in the data-assimilation (DA) literature. I will pose several questions: Which DA problems should be considered multi-scale? Are there common characteristics that make multi-scale problems especially interesting or difficult? If so, what are they? To what extent are those characteristics inherited from the physical system or from other aspects of the DA problem?
