Abstract:

We have been developing a global atmospheric DA system comprised of AFES (Atmospheric GCM for the Earth Simulator) and LETKF (Local Ensemble Transform Kalman Filter). Using this DA system the experimental atmospheric global ensemble reanalysis (ALERA) dataset has been generated and archived since 2008. Using the reanalysis and DA system we have conducted some OSE studies to help design of observing systems collaborating with some observational campaigns, especially in the Arctic regions. Recently we have also performed some weather predictability studies by using the ensemble reanalysis as initial values for the AFES global atmospheric model. We will introduce one of the OSE studies for the strong Arctic cyclone event in the summer of 2012 and recent development of our DA system to contribute OSE and predictability studies.
