Current Projects

  • PhD Topic: "Assessing the validity and impact of urban-scale numerical weather prediction"
    My PhD work is supervised by Dr Janet Barlow and Dr Humphrey Lean (UK Met Office). The main aim of this project is to compare urban meteorological data with model output in order to determine whether NWP models (specifically, the Met Office's forecasting model) are accurately representing exchanges of heat, moisture and energy between the boundary layer and the rest of the atmosphere above urban surfaces. The observations used to make these comparisons are being collected as part of the ACTUAL project in central London. Previously, high- quality continuous meteorological data collected in urban areas has been relatively scarce, making comparison with model output impractical. The ACTUAL data will be used to investigate whether the assumptions made about the boundary layer in NWP models can be sensibly applied to urban surfaces, given their complex geometry and difference from rural boundary layers.
